On Magha Shukla Panchami, the birth anniversary of Maa Saraswati—the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom—is celebrated. In 2026, this sacred festival will be observed on Friday, 23rd January.
According to ancient mythological beliefs, when Lord Brahma created the universe, he brought into existence trees, plants, animals, and human beings. However, he felt that his creation lacked knowledge and wisdom. To resolve this, Lord Brahma sprinkled water from his kamandal, from which emerged a beautiful goddess with four arms.
In one hand she held a veena, in another a book, in the third a rosary, and the fourth hand was in a gesture of blessing (var mudra). Lord Brahma requested the goddess to play the veena. As soon as its melodious notes filled the universe, Brahma himself was immersed in the bliss of knowledge. He then bestowed upon her the name Saraswati, the Goddess of speech, wisdom, and learning.

As Goddess Saraswati manifested on Magha Shukla Panchami, this sacred date is known as Saraswati Jayanti as well as Bagishwari Jayanti.
For students devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, this festival is considered one of the most auspicious occasions to worship Goddess Saraswati. It also marks the beginning of the spring season (Vasant Ritu). During this time, nature is adorned with yellow blossoms. Hence, yellow flowers, yellow gulal, and turmeric hold special significance in the worship of Goddess Saraswati.
It is believed that Lord Brahma composed the hymn “Shri Siddha Saraswati Stotra” to establish knowledge and wisdom in all living beings of the universe. This sacred stotra was later adopted and revered by great sages and saints. For this reason, the birth anniversary of Goddess Saraswati has been celebrated every year on Vasant Panchami, and devotees worship her on this auspicious day.
