Putrada Ekadashi, observed during the Shukla Paksha of the Shravana month, is believed to bestow joy of progeny, family progress, and mental peace. According to a story mentioned in the Padma Purana, King Mahijit of Mahishmati was deeply distressed due to being childless. He approached his guru Sage Lomasha for a solution. The sage revealed that due to sins of a previous birth, the king was deprived of progeny and advised him to observe the Putrada Ekadashi vrat. The king and queen observed the fast with complete devotion and proper rituals, as a result of which they were blessed with a radiant and virtuous son.
Observing this vrat grants progeny, growth of lineage, mental peace, and destruction of sins. It enhances harmony in married life and brings happiness and prosperity to the family.
Putrada Ekadashi occurs twice a year—once in the Shravana month (July–August) and again in the Paush month (December–January).
