Pitru Paksha (Shraddha) – An Opportunity to Offer Tarpan and Pind Daan to Ancestors
By performing Shraddha in Pitru Paksha, the ancestors remain satisfied for the whole year and protect age, fame, reputation, sons and wealth.
The wisdom of the ancient Indian sages has granted divine status to parents, teachers (Acharyas), and guests in the sacred scriptures. A household where parents, gurus, and guests are honored is not merely considered a temple, but is regarded as equivalent to heaven itself. The members of such a household are believed to be endowed with divine energies.
The mutual love, respect, and reverence among the members of such homes attract the blessings and powers of both the gods and the ancestors. In households where children humbly bow before their parents, teachers, and guests to seek their blessings, nature bestows upon them longevity, knowledge, fame, and both positive and creative energies.
By performing Shraddha in Pitru Paksha, the ancestors remain satisfied for the whole year and protect age, fame, reputation, sons and wealth.
In Indian Hindi calendar, the entire dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin is called Pitru Paksha. During this time, the ancestors of Pitruloka start roaming in the air around the houses of their sons and grandsons of the same gotra. They are pleased to see the offerings made by their sons and other members of the family and wait for the Shraadh feast organized on the date of their death.
If a Brahmin is invited for the Shraddha feast and a delicious meal is served which includes Kheer as a must, then after having that food through the Brahmin and enjoying satisfaction, and being pleased with the Dakshina along with clothes given to the Brahmin by the Shraddha performer with respect, the Brahmin is blessed with wealth, health, long life, sons and grandsons and then the ancestors depart for the world of ancestors.
In Brahmapuran, Lord Vyas has written that those sons who do not respect their parents, grandparents while they are alive and do not perform their last rites and cremation rituals after their death, become corrupt from the duty of a son.
Such corrupt sons, due to lack of faith in performing the shraddha rites of their parents, suffer throughout their lives by becoming the father of poor, foolish, uneducated, cultureless, sick, inactive, childless or immoral sons due to the curse of their ancestors.
That is why the scriptures order that “देवपितृकार्याभ्याम् न प्रमदितव्यम्” i.e. one should never miss worshipping the gods and ancestors.
This year, the Shraadh will start from Monday, 8 September, 2025 and will continue till Sunday, 21 September, 2025 Amavasya (14 days).
Keep in mind that this year the Shraadh of Purnima will be on Sunday, 7 September, 2025
