Ashwin Shukla Paksha (Papankusha Ekadashi)

Papankusha Ekadashi is regarded as a highly powerful Ekadashi that destroys sins and enhances good fortune and prosperity in life. According to a story described in the Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana, there once lived a cruel hunter on the Vindhya mountain who spent his life in daily violence. One day, he encountered a sage who explained the cause of his sinful deeds and advised him to observe the Papankusha Ekadashi vrat. The sage assured him that through this fast, all his sins could be destroyed. The hunter observed the vrat with repentance and devotion, leading to a miraculous transformation—he renounced violence and embraced a righteous and dharmic life.

Observing this vrat leads to the destruction of sins, removal of fear, and bestows long life, happiness, prosperity, and ultimately liberation (moksha).

Papankusha Ekadashi is observed every year during the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Ashwin.
