Shattila Ekadashi on Makar Sankranti
Shattila Ekadashi, observed on the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha, is renowned for its great spiritual significance. When this fast occurs while the Sun is positioned in Makara (Capricorn), sesame seeds (til), which are especially dear to Lord Shani, are used in six sacred ways. On this Ekadashi, bathing with sesame-infused water, applying sesame paste, consuming sesame-based food, and donating sesame seeds hold special importance.
It is a highly auspicious coincidence that Makar Sankranti also falls on Shattila Ekadashi this year, making the observance even more sacred and rewarding.
Sesame seeds are believed to have originated from the perspiration of Lord Narayana and are considered destroyers of sin. They are said to bestow satisfaction and fulfillment. The presiding deity of Ekadashi is Lord Narayana Himself.

Ekadashi symbolizes Goddess Lakshmi, whose beloved consort is Lord Narayana (Vishnu). By observing the Ekadashi fast and worshipping Lord Narayana, Goddess Lakshmi is pleased; and through the combined grace of Lakshmi and Narayana, the sins of both past and present lives are destroyed. The devotee attains purity, clarity, simplicity, diligence, and progressive spiritual growth.
On this day, the donation of a black (Shyama) cow is considered especially meritorious. Donating sesame seeds, clothing, grains, cooked food, fruits, and offering prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Narayana; performing mantra japa, yajnas, and taking holy baths in sacred rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, or at Prayag Sangam—all these acts are believed to bestow virtuous living and fulfill heartfelt desires.
