Kartik Purnima is also known as Dev Diwali and Tripura Purnima. This Purnima also marks the birth anniversary of the great syncretic saint Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Bathing in the Ganges and lighting lamps on this day hold great significance. If the Krittika Nakshatra is on Kartik Purnima, Mahakartiki Yoga is formed. By chance, this year Kartik Purnima falls on the Krittika Nakshatra. Donations made on this day yield endless rewards.

According to mythological belief, on this day Lord Shiva killed a demon named Tripura. It is said that after performing penance for one hundred thousand years in Prayagraj, the demon Tripura acquired divine powers and began to commit atrocities. His atrocities terrified the entire universe, including the gods. The gods tried various methods to break his penance, but he grew more powerful, and one day he climbed Mount Kailash and attacked Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva, with the help of Brahma and Vishnu, killed him. Since then, this full moon has gained special significance, and it has also come to be known as Tripurari Purnima. Overjoyed by the destruction of Tripurasura, the gods in heaven lit lamps to welcome Lord Shiva, and this day was called Dev Diwali.
